Research programmes

The overall aim of ARiD research programme is to make research knowledge easily available to facilitate social change. Our research takes place both as part of our social action programmes, and on various themes. ARiD’s research is contextually oriented and always carried out in cooperation with other partners. We value rigor in scientific research.

Our research programmes focus on the following broad thematic areas:

    On-going research project: A Longitudinal Study on the Effect of Income Generating Activity support on Education and Protection Outcomes for Children from Child Headed Households in Northern Uganda (2013-2015). Sponsor: War Child UK.

Community Research Centre Project

ARiD’s Community Research Centre is the first Centre to be set up in northern Uganda. In order to support our research work, the Centre will be equipped with modern ICT equipment and essential library materials and periodicals. For the Centre to be fully operational, it requires computers, computer furniture, bookshelves, books and other library materials.

Projects

Our ongoing project involves the following:

  • Establishing the Community Resource centre with modern ICT equipment and library materials
  • Child sponsorship project – this project involves sponsoring disadvantaged children in schools
  • Research on: religion and society; human trafficking; and, water research governance
  • Sustainable livelihood projects (still in the offing)
  • Building a training centre for e-learning (still in the offing)
  • Consultancies: we continue to support local, national, regional and international organizations, institutions and individuals with quality consultancy services. Members of our staff have so far supported the following work: assessment of post-referendum South Sudan and its regional implication on peace and security - a research commissioned by Civil Society Organizations for Peace in Northern Uganda December 2010/Jan 2011; conflict vulnerability assessment for Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea – a study commissioned by COMESA (2010); incisive analysis of factors influencing the Lord’s Resistance Army mid-level commanders decision to abandon rebellion – a study commissioned by Conciliation Resources (UK) in DRC, CAR, Sudan and Uganda (2010).

Community Research Centre Project

ARiD’s Community Research Centre will be the first Centre to be set up in Pader.

In order to support our research work, the Centre will be equipped with modern ICT equipment and essential library materials and periodicals.

At the moment, the Centre requires more computers, computer furniture, bookshelves, books and other essestial library materials.

What we plan to do

ARiD’s strategic plan that incorporates community vision is ambitious but achievable in the long run. We are embarking on fundraising for implementing the following activities:

[hilite img="images/stories/1.jpg" title="Initiate e-community development programme " style="4"]Initiate e-community development programme ARiD strives to set up a modern and robust e-community development Resource Centre with modern environmentally friendly ICT equipments, internet services and relevant resource materials in conflict, peace and development for the purpose of: (a) educating children, youth, men, women, mentally challenged people; (b) generating and disseminating knowledge; (c) promoting access to information and communication rights; (d) enhancing community networking; and, (e) applying ICT into socio-economic, politico-cultural development, particularly in marginalized rural and urban communities and regions. Our priority in 2011 is to set up the e-Community Resource Centre which will serve as the centre of excellence for e-community development in northern Uganda. Local, national, regional and international researchers, academics and organizations will find this initiative worthwhile. Interested and like-minded parties like you will find this noble course useful in making a difference in the quest for peace and development in sub-Saharan African. We intend to set up a hub for volunteering, internship and fellowship programmes with effect from summer 2011. The overall goal of establishing the hub is to provide interns, volunteers and fellows with opportunities to bridge theory and practice and also learn from the various areas of expertise offered by ARiD's staff. Volunteers will find this opportunity exciting as they actively get integrated into ARiD's various research projects. Local and international volunteers will have opportunities to work with local community in Pader and Agago districts in northern Uganda. ARiD will establish a Centre for Alternative Education (CAE) for people whose formal education was affected by the civil war in northern Uganda. Fellowship and Volunteer Programmes

ARiD fellows, interns and volunteers comprise of multi-cultural community from a wide array of background who come to work with ARiD in Uganda. We host individuals who are interested either in enhancing or developing their careers and skills in conflict, peace and development or directly supporting local community development. We offer an independent platform for critical debates that brings together the best multidisciplinary thinkers and practitioners to shed light on contemporary social issues affecting humankind. Currently, we host our research fellows, interns or volunteers in Pader district, Uganda. Anybody is free to work with us.


Our fellows, interns and volunteers are united through a set of shared values, commitment to improve the prospects of our communities and build a better society. We engage our volunteers in ongoing ARiD programmes based on their skills and interests. Small donations, covering the programme costs, are at the heart of our ability to achieve these aims.
